A giant Australian study of nearly half million children ages 4 to 6 years shows that those conceived using in-vitro fertilization techniques enjoy developmental and educational outcomes statistically equal to those of children naturally conceived. This is comforting news indeed for the parents of some 8 million children worldwide who have been brought into the world through the magic of IVF.

Teen Girls Who Exercise Vigorously Are More Tuned In

The intensity of physical exercise is directly related to the level of attentiveness for adolescent girls. This according to a study of 418 teens, mean age 16 years conducted by neuroscientists at the University of Illinois-Urbana. Exercise intensity did not affect working memory or executive functions. Here’s the hitch: intense exercise had no such beneficial effect on the teen boys.

Cancer Raises Long CoVid Risk 4 Fold

A full 60% of patients treated for various cancers at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas have developed long CoVid symptoms. Compare that to the national average for long CoVid as of December 2022 which, according to the CDC, is about 15%. The researchers surveyed 312 cancer patients and also found that female cancer patients had a higher incidence than males 63% to 51%. The intriguing findings were that those with more troublesome cancers, relapsing and treatment-resistant, and those with high blood pressure were less likely to develop long CoVid.

Vaccinating Pregnant Women Reduces Infant Whooping Cough

The incidence of pertussis, whooping cough, in babies over 6 months of age was cut over 60% after pregnant women began to be consistently vaccinated with the triple vaccine, TDap, that protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis. The CDC now reports this result after analyzing more than 57,000 cases of whooping cough over 20 years. Whooping cough can be deadly dangerous for our youngest babies. Half of those who contract it end up in the hospital, 20% develop pneumonia, and 1 in every 100 don’t cough. They stop breathing, turn blue, and die. Bottom line: mothers to be should get the TDap shot.

Listening to music you love lowers your pain threshold. Dutch anesthesia-pain researchers studied the perception of pressure- and electrically-induced pain in 415 subjects. Tolerance for both types of pain was better for those listening to their preferred brands of music rather than music they found annoying. One odd finding: listening to music you hate prior to that you love improved its pain-reducing effect.

Swiss biomedical researchers have discovered that prostate cancers require the enzyme PI5P4K for survival. This enzyme, a lipid kinase, is critical for androgen receptor signaling and prostate cancer viability and progression. The researchers suggest targeting this enzymatic system as therapy for the eradication and possible prevention of prostatic cancer. It’s in the future, but let’s hope it pans out.

Hormone A Possible Low Sex Drive Treatment

The aptly named hormone kisspeptin seems like a good candidate for treating women as well as men with pathologically low sex drives. Imperial College London endocrinologists now report this conclusion stemming from two separate studies. Using data from MR imaging as well as blood tests, they found that kisspeptin administration enhances responses to sexual stimuli and boosts those brain pathways that facilitate physical attraction in both genders. In men, kisspeptin not only affects the brain but also has direct positive effects on erectile function.

Johns Hopkins public health researchers find that the prescription medications most prominently advertised on TV have low added benefit in the treatment of diseases they target. A full two-thirds of the 135 drugs most frequently pitched on TV, radio, newspaper, internet, and billboard advertising were typically not the first choices of mainstream clinicians. The drug ratings come from France and Canada since the US does not assess the comparable effectiveness of medications. What’s the 411 on this? Surprise. Surprise. The drug companies are force feeding these drugs into our psyches so that we’ll hound our medical teams into prescribing them. Guess what. This manipulation is working.

Heart Valve Grows With Children

Cardiac surgeons at the Boston Children’s Hospital in collaboration with MIT bioengineers developed the first prosthetic pulmonary valve replacement that can expand as a child’s anatomy dictates.
